TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said Tuesday (Oct. 29) that Taiwan’s power generation will be sufficient to meet the demand for semiconductors and AI by 2030.
Reporting to the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday, Cho said the government needs to be cautious about its energy policy, per CNA. He said according to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Control Act, any measures to extend the operational life of nuclear plants must be proposed five years in advance.
In line with this law, Maanshan Nuclear Power Plant’s Unit 1 has already been decommissioned, and the second unit must also cease operations by May 2025.
Cho stressed the use of nuclear power should comply with regulations, per UDN. If new nuclear technologies in the future can meet the safety prerequisites, then the government is open to discussions.
Cho said besides promoting solar and wind renewable energy, the government is also promoting other sources including geothermal energy. He said, that by 2023 the government aims for green energy to account for 30%, coal 20%, and gas 50% of energy sources.
