TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Matsu police and government officials said they will strengthen enforcement after the county’s first drunk driving fatality.
The accident occurred on Nangan Island at around 10 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 26), per UDN. A 69-year-old woman died after she was hit by a driver whose blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit.
Matsu’s Lienchiang County Police Department met with tourism and transport officials and local leaders at the accident site to discuss prevention measures on Wednesday, per CNA. The officials met on the instruction of Lienchiang County Magistrate Wang Chung-ming (王忠銘).
Police Chief Secretary Chen Wen-pin (陳文彬) said police have increased inspections around where the fatality occurred since Monday. Chen said police will crack down on drunk driving around restaurants, karaoke bars, and other locations where alcohol is consumed for at least a week or more.
Lienchiang County Transport and Tourism Department Chief Chen Ping-liang (陳秉樑) said lighting needed to be improved at the accident site. He also suggested installing sensors at pedestrian crossings to remind drivers of their presence.
After the incident members of the public called for more taxi and driver services for those who have consumed alcohol.
Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office Lienchiang County Supervision Office Chief Wang Tun-tao (王敦濤) said his office worked with the local taxi union to establish a night service in 2022. He said two taxi drivers work night shifts each night on Nangan Island.
