TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Researchers have developed an AI-enabled app that can translate between Taiwanese and Indonesian and a range of other products as part of a National Science and Technology Council project.
The council said on Wednesday (Oct. 30) the app was part of its “Inclusive Technology Project," per CNA. It said the initiative was created in response to the Cabinet's 2020 recommendation that technology policy cater to Taiwanese of different races, generations, and cultures.
The council said its Humanities and Social Science Research Division had developed the two-way translation app. It said this app will help Indonesian caregivers communicate with Taiwanese care recipients.

Researchers have also developed the first Seediq language corpus, which will be expanded to include the Tsou and other Indigenous Taiwanese languages in the future, the council said. It said the corpus will be used to create a chatbot, text translations, and synthesized speech outputs.
The council said that AI technology to help people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and cerebral palsy communicate has also been developed. It said the communication aids integrate VR glasses to help people with these disorders integrate into society.
Researchers have also created a map of Hualien that identifies risks to disabled people, the council said. It said researchers have promoted the results of this project throughout Taiwan to improve disaster resilience for the disabled.
