TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Health and Welfare has urged the public to prioritize diabetes prevention on Wednesday (Oct. 30) as World Diabetes Day approaches.
According to a 2019 to 2023 national health survey, 12.8% of Taiwanese adults aged 20 and older have diabetes. The health ministry emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups, as early symptoms of diabetes can be subtle.
A diabetes awareness carnival will be held at Tainan's Chimei Museum on Nov. 9. The event aligns with the "Diabetes and Well-being" theme of World Diabetes Day 2024-2026.
World Diabetes Day falls on Nov. 14 and was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). The day was recognized by the United Nations (UN) in 2006, according to the WHO.
Tips for preventing diabetes:
- Regular health check-ups
Taiwanese aged 40 and above can receive free health check-ups every three years. Those 65 and older can get annual check-ups.
The Health Promotion Administration's website allows users to input their health data to calculate their risk of developing five chronic diseases over the next decade. Diseases include coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
- Monitor blood sugar
Those with abnormal blood sugar levels are advised to monitor blood glucose regularly. Fasting blood sugar levels should be kept between 70 and 99 mg/dL.
- Reverse or mange metabolic syndrome
Individuals with abnormal blood glucose levels and two or more additional metabolic risk factors, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, or low HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol) cholesterol, are diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. To manage this condition and reduce the risk of complications, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider.
- Adopt healthy diet
Focus on a balanced diet that is low in fat, salt, and sugar, but high in fiber. Work with a healthcare provider for personalized weight management.
- Stay active
Aim for at least 30 minutes of daily exercise.
