TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Kong-rey’s damage to Taiwan's agriculture and facilities last week reached NT$1.38 billion (US$43.14 million), the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) reported Tuesday (Nov. 5).
According to a Tuesday press release, Yunlin County suffered the most damage at NT$365.01 million, accounting for 28% of the total agricultural damage in Taiwan. Next was Hualien County at NT$317.56 million, followed by Taitung County at NT$178.65 million, per CNA.
Agricultural losses amounted to NT$1.12 billion. The affected crop area was 21,135 hectares, with a damage severity of 27%, translating to a non-harvestable area of 5,635 hectares.
The top five affected crops were pears, second-crop rice, custard apples, garlic, and sweet corn.
The total loss in private facilities was NT$184.78 million, including:
- Agricultural land erosion and burial losses of NT$6.30 million
- Agricultural facility losses of NT$30.26 million
- Livestock facility losses of NT$21.33 million
- Fishery facility losses of NT$126.88 million
