TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) congratulated Republican candidate Donald Trump on his victory in the United States presidential elections Wednesday (Nov. 6).
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Lai wrote he was confident the long-standing Taiwan-US partnership would continue to serve as a cornerstone for regional stability. Built on shared values and interests, the relationship would lead to greater prosperity for all, Lai wrote.
A statement on the Presidential Office website congratulated Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, but also thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their steadfast support of Taiwan during their terms in office. No matter which US party is in power, the relationship between the two countries has improved and deepened, the statement said.
Taiwan would continue to value its long-standing friendship, and cooperate with the new administration and Congress. Presidential Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) emphasized positive relations with both the Republican and the Democratic Party and their unanimous support for Taiwan.
The new US president’s responsibility was heavy in a time of serious global challenges, with the US playing a key role in safeguarding world peace and prosperity, and the development of democracy. As a member of the global democratic community, Taiwan wanted to be a trusted partner of the US and continue to work closely together on behalf of international security and stability, Kuo said.
