TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese breakdancer Sun Chen (孫振) was honored with a Sports Elite Award by the Sports Administration on Thursday (Nov. 7).
Sun, known as B-Boy Quake, represented Taiwan at the Paris Olympics this year. He expressed gratitude for the recognition and vowed to continue promoting the sport, per CNA.
The breakdancer's early passion for the sport has fueled his success, Sports Administration Deputy Director-General Hung Chih-chang (洪志昌) remarked. His innovative approach to incorporating Taiwanese cultural elements into his performances has contributed to the growing popularity of the sport in Taiwan.
Sun's participation in the Paris Olympics marked a historic moment for local breakdancing. Despite not advancing past the preliminary round, he secured Taiwan's first Olympic spot in the sport.
Given the spotlight on the Paris Olympics and Paralympics this year, the Elite Sports Awards nominees are mostly athletes who participated in these events, Hung said. Their outstanding performances have made them strong contenders for the awards.
Sun will kick off his end-of-year competition run with a domestic qualifier on Nov. 30. He will then travel to Brazil's Rio de Janeiro for the Red Bull BC One World Final on Dec. 7 as a wild card entrant.
Sun will also compete in the WDSF (World DanceSport Federation) World Breaking Championships in Chengdu, China, as a member of the Taiwanese national team. The tournament is scheduled for Dec. 21-22.
