TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Customs officers intercepted nearly 5 kilograms of heroin in a package sent from Laos to a Thai national working illegally in Chiayi, police said on Friday (Nov. 8).
Taipei Police Department said the man, named Sai (塞), and a woman surnamed Wa (瓦) were arrested in connection with the case, per CNA. They said Sai was in Taiwan to receive the package and planned to hand it over to Wa.
Wa entered Taiwan claiming she was sightseeing before she was arrested with zip lock bags, a knife, and an electronic scale, police said.
Police said the heroin seized has a market value of about NT$20 million (US$620,000). Heroin is listed as a category one drug under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, and those found guilty of importing or selling it face the death penalty or life imprisonment.
