TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Prosecutors have been tasked with investigating the death of an Indonesian woman at a National Immigration Agency (NIA) detention center in Yilan, reports said Tuesday (Nov. 12).
The woman entered the detention center on Oct. 21 and first reported on Nov. 7 that she had health problems, including a cough, per CNA. She consulted a doctor the same day, received medicine, and went to rest.
On Monday morning, her roommate reported she had not gotten out of bed, the NIA said. An ambulance took her to a hospital, where attempts to resuscitate her failed.
According to the regulations, the NIA notified police of her death, with prosecutors tasked to organize an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Officials had contacted the Indonesian representative office in Taipei to notify the woman’s relatives.
The NIA denied media reports that the detention center had demanded the hospital mention a natural cause of death on the death certificate. Each week, a doctor visited the Yilan detention center for consultations, while emergency cases were transferred to an outside hospital, NIA officials said, emphasizing that this case had been handled according to the rules.
