TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Kong-rey caused more than NT$320 million (US$9.9 million) in agricultural losses in Hualien County, according to a report presented by the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Tuesday (Nov. 12).
The MOA said seven townships in the county were affected by the typhoon. Major crops affected include rice, corn, bananas, soybeans, pumpkins, and buckwheat, per UDN.
To speed up the distribution of disaster assistance to farmers, the MOA said it would step up inspection of agricultural fields affected by the typhoon. It would also work to expedite the distribution of financial assistance to farmers allowing them to resume farming and replanting as soon as possible.
Hualien County’s Department of Agriculture Director Chen Shu-wen (陳淑雯) said farmers who have lost at least 20% of their crop are eligible for assistance. To make such claims, farmers must provide documentation such as photos of damage or other documentation to the MOA.
Such documents can include production verification and sales receipts, agricultural transfer incentive program documents, environmental program documentation, and awards for agricultural upgrades and improvement. The MOA reminded farmers the deadline for applying for Typhoon Kong-rey assistance is Friday (Nov. 15).
Farmers who meet qualifications are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. The MOA also urged local government authorities to mobilize the necessary manpower to conduct inspections and collect evidence from farm areas affected by Typhoon Kong-rey.
