TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kinmen County Public Health Bureau said Tuesday (Nov. 12) that as of Monday (Nov. 11) 893 children in Kinmen have been diagnosed with mild enterovirus infections.
The bureau said in a press release that 99 classes on the island have voluntarily suspended operations, affecting 2,033 individuals.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there have been six confirmed cases of severe enterovirus infection with complications this year. Five cases involved infants under 1-year-old, per CNA.
The CDC said the outbreak is expected to peak in late November and subside by late December. It urged residents to take precautions.
According to the Kinmen County guidelines, students diagnosed with enterovirus should undergo self-health management at home for seven days and are not allowed to attend school or after-school programs. Parents must report to the school and ensure the child stays home to avoid contact with other children.
The bureau reminded the public that enterovirus is highly contagious and easily spreads in places with close human contact. It advised parents to monitor the health of young children closely and take precautions.
