TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Host country Peru labeling Taiwan as “China Taipei” instead of “Chinese Taipei” at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit was a simple mistake, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Thursday (Nov. 14).
The wrong name was printed on a Spanish-language invitation to the media to attend meetings with Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Taiwan envoy Lin Hsin-i (林信義) on Wednesday (Nov. 13). The only part of the message where “Chinese Taipei” was mentioned, was where reporters needed to mark which country they were from.

Pressure from China was suspected to be behind the use of the name for Taiwan, per CNA. MOFA said the APEC summit media department had informed it that the use of “China Taipei” on the letter was merely a mistake. It was corrected to “Chinese Taipei” on all correspondence later on.
Lin, a former vice premier and economics minister, is representing President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) at the Lima summit because China blocked Taiwan’s president from attending APEC’s annual leadership meetings.
