TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Tropical Storm Usagi was downgraded to a tropical depression Saturday (Nov. 16) morning before making landfall in south Taiwan.
Earlier predictions had the storm crossing Pingtung before moving out into the Pacific from Taitung on Saturday, but the Central Weather Administration (CWA) canceled all sea and land alerts for the region at 11:30 a.m.
Nevertheless, torrential rain is still expected to affect Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, and Tainan during most of Saturday, per CNA. Forecasters also warned of strong winds in Penghu, Green Island and Orchid Island in Taitung, and along the coast in Pingtung, Kaohsiung, and areas up north up to Keelung.
Seasonal northeasterly winds are likely to strengthen during the weekend, bringing lower temperatures and abundant rainfall to Yilan, the coast of Keelung, and higher areas in Taipei and New Taipei, CNA reported.
Meanwhile, another typhoon, Man-yi, is expected to cross the Philippines island of Luzon Sunday (Nov. 17) before moving away toward Vietnam. It could cause extensive rainfall in Taiwan after the weekend.
