TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Team Taiwan faced off against the national baseball team of Australia at the Taipei Dome as part of the WBSC Premier12 Opening Round on Sunday (Nov. 17).
Coming fresh off a defeat by Japan on Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Taipei Dome, Taiwan rallied on Sunday to triumph over Australia 11-3.
Taiwan began the night with a solid performance, batting a run in the first inning, with Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) scoring a run. Chen was walked to first by Australian pitcher Mitch Neunborn, then stole second, before running home thanks to a hit from Pan Chieh-kai (潘傑楷).

In the second, Li Kai-wei (李凱威) was also walked, and after advancing to third, made his way home thanks to a single by Lin Li (林立). Australia was able to score in the bottom of the third inning with a home run by Solomon Macguire, but Taiwan took a decisive lead in the fourth inning thanks to a double by Tseng Song-en (曾頌恩) which brought home Lin Li and Chen Chieh-hsien.
Taiwan got another run in the fifth inning with a run by Chen Chen-wei (陳晨威). The team pulled further away from Australia with a spectacular home run by Lin Li in the seventh inning that brought home Chang Cheng-yu (張政禹) and Chen Chen-wei, making the score 8-1.
Australia made one run in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to a hit into deep left field by Robbie Perkins.
In the final inning, Taiwan notched three additional runs, thanks to a home run by Giljegjaw Kung-kuan (吉力吉撈 鞏冠) which also brought home Lin Li and Chen Chieh-hsien. Australia scored another run before the end of the game when Tim Kennelly was batted in, but it was too little, too late.
Thanks to their previous wins over South Korea and the Dominican Republic, Taiwan will join the Super Round in Tokyo next week. Team Taiwan will advance regardless of the outcome of Taiwan’s game with Cuba on Monday (Nov. 18), which will be the final game of the Opening Round.
