TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) envoy Lin Hsin-i (林信義) said he achieved his mission of highlighting Taiwan’s role in the economic prosperity of the Indo-Pacific at this year’s APEC summit in Peru.
At a press conference on Sunday (Nov. 17), Lin reiterated Taiwan’s advancements in semiconductor manufacturing, digital medicine, and agriculture, according to Peruvian newspaper Uno. He also mentioned Taiwan's progress in fostering the competitiveness of enterprises in the digital era. Empowering women and vulnerable groups is also an important facet of Taiwan’s approach to economic development, the envoy said.
Lin said his participation at the summit was positive, as it helped to strengthen and expand his country's diplomatic and economic ties with Peru. He pointed to Peru's strategic location in the heart of South America and its vast reserves of minerals as reasons for its significance.
During the summit, Lin met US President Joe Biden on the sidelines and discussed Taiwan-related issues. He thanked Biden for his contributions to US-Taiwan relations over the past four years. Lin also met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Lin’s daughter, Lin Wen-hsuan (林玟萱), was part of the Taiwanese delegation and attended a wheelchair donation ceremony organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Lima. Sixty wheelchairs were gifted to the Cayetano Heredia Hospital.
Segundo Cecilio Acho Mego, general director of the hospital, thanked Taiwan for this gesture of solidarity. The wheelchairs will help expand and improve care for the more than 3 million patients from Northern Lima who visit the hospital annually, he said.
