TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) apologized on Wednesday (Nov. 2) for the death of a civil servant who died by suicide at work.
Cho expressed his “deepest regrets” for the death of the labor ministry employee who passed away at a New Taipei office of the Workforce Development Agency on Nov. 4. Cho said the government has lost a valuable public servant, and that an investigation into the incident will be carried out, per CNA.
Cho said that he will immediately launch a comprehensive review of measures to prevent workplace bullying in government agencies. He said employee protections will be improved, investigations will be expedited, and the Cabinet will discuss the findings of reviews.
Labor Minister Ho Pei-shan (何佩珊) also apologized for the death on Tuesday. On Wednesday she said she was not qualified to hold the role of labor minister and that she would offer to resign from the Cabinet.
Asked if Ho should resign, Cho said he would wait for the results of an investigation into who was responsible for the incident before making a decision.
Ho explained the results of a preliminary investigation into the death as she apologized on Tuesday. She said the employee who died was overworked and that a supervisor at their office had yelled and made workers feel intimidated.
