TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Guests arrived at a resort in the mountains of Hsinchu County on Saturday (Nov. 23) for the wedding ceremony of Bo Guagua (薄瓜瓜), the son of imprisoned former Chinese Communist Party politician Bo Xilai (薄熙来).
The younger Bo’s arrival in Taiwan the previous week received widespread attention due to his background. His father was once seen as a major rival to current Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平).
The younger Bo first visited the Lotung Poh-Ai Hospital in Luodong, Yilan County, for a health check. The hospital was founded by the grandfather of his bride, Hsu Huei-yu (許惠瑜), a member of an influential family in Yilan County. She is also known as Deffany Hsu, the Canadian country manager for an educational group, per UDN.
Bo lives in Canada as well, though he is believed to hold a British passport.
On Saturday, buses carrying guests and trucks with music systems and supplies were seen arriving at a luxury resort known as The One Nanyuan Land of Retreat and Wellness. The site is in a relatively isolated part of Hsinchu County near the township of Xinpu.
Security was tight as reporters were kept outside the perimeter and staff checked the credentials of drivers and passengers. CNA reported that it was unclear whether the wedding banquet was being held at noon or during the evening, CNA reported.
Police officers showed up after reports that a crowd outside the venue was obstructing traffic. They were tight-lipped about whether they had prepared extra security measures due to the bridegroom’s sensitive background.
Friends and family of the couple reportedly attended a dinner in Xizhi, New Taipei, on Friday.
