TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) held a ceremony on Tuesday (Nov. 26) to mark the first arrival of manufacturing equipment at its new fab in Kaohsiung.
TSMC did not publicize the first tool-in ceremony, though multiple news reports said it was attended by the company’s Executive Vice President Y.P. Chyn (秦永沛), supply chain partners, and Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁). Chen confirmed he had received an invitation to the event on Tuesday morning.
Construction on the Kaohsiung factory began in 2022. It is expected to begin mass production of 2-nanometer chips in the first half of 2026, per CNA.
TSMC is building another 2nm fab in Hsinchu also expected to enter production next year. Apple and AMD are expected to be the first customers to receive 2nm chips from the new plants.
Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) said last Wednesday that TSMC would launch plans for one new fab a year in Taiwan over the next decade. The following day National Development Council Minister Paul Liu (劉鏡清) said the new fabs would be in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Taichung.
