TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A ticker-tape parade was held in Taipei on Tuesday (Nov. 26) to honor the Taiwan baseball team after their historic 4-0 win in the WBSC Premier12 championship in Tokyo against Japan on Sunday.
A parade was held to celebrate the victory, and the Army deployed more than 30 military vehicles for the players to ride on, per CNA.
The parade began at 3:10 p.m. at the Ketagalan Boulevard and Gongyuan Road intersection. It proceeded along Xiangyang Road, turned onto Guanqian Road, and led to “Hero Valley” (英雄谷), where confetti was released to honor the team.
Eight tents were set up along the route to distribute exclusive “Team Taiwan” banners and small national flags. The parade turned left onto the south side of Zhongxiao West Road, then left again onto Chongqing South Road Section 1.
When the parade arrived at the Presidential Office Building, the team passed through a saber arch formed by the honor guard. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) greeted each of the players and congratulated them.
Lai thanked the players and described them as the “light of Taiwan,” per FTV News. Lai said their achievement showed the world that “Taiwan is not just about semiconductors —Taiwan also has baseball.”
While delivering remarks, Team Captain Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) teared up saying he never thought the team or even his generation would win the championship, per TVBS. “But what I want to say is thank you to our generation — our efforts have been seen by the world,” said Chen.
