TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — G7 foreign ministers called for maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait at a meeting in Fiuggi, Italy on Tuesday (Nov. 26).
G7 in a statement reaffirmed their opposition to China’s militarization and coercive tactics in the South China Sea, per CNA.
“Maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is indispensable to international security and prosperity,” it said. “We call for the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues.”
The ministers also expressed concern about the situation in the East and South China Seas. They cited China’s water cannons against Philippine and Vietnamese vessels as dangerous actions.
The group also condemned China’s sentencing of 45 pro-democracy Hong Kong activists and urged it to abide by international human rights and legal obligations.
Additionally, G7 called on China not to engage in activities aimed at undermining the security of democratic countries. It urged China to act in accordance with the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention of Consular Relations.
