TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Facebook's market share in Taiwan has dropped over 10% since 2022, the Taiwan Network Information Center reported Wednesday (Nov. 27).
Facebook's market share dropped from 61.22% to 50.29%, with users migrating to Instagram, X, and Douyin/TikTok. Instagram and Douyin/TikTok followed with 23.89% and 2.87% market share, respectively.
The report also found that digital platforms, including search engines, news portals, social media, YouTube, and instant messaging apps have become the primary news source for Taiwanese. This marks the first time digital platforms (49.25%) have surpassed traditional media (42.55%).
Line remains the dominant instant messaging app in Taiwan, with over 90% market share. Meta's Messenger ranked second with 4.06%.
The report highlighted a significant decline in public trust in the digital environment. About 80% of Taiwanese social media users believe these platforms are flooded with fake news and misinformation.
Over 60% of messaging app users share similar concerns about the spread of misinformation on these platforms. For traditional media, 59.81% of respondents believe they also disseminate false information.
Taiwan Network Information Center CEO Yu Jo-fan (余若凡) said Taiwan's internet penetration rate exceeds 85%. Despite the high rate, Yu warned of a growing digital trust crisis.
The increase of fake news and scams has eroded public trust in the digital environment and coupled with Taiwan's high internet penetration rate, makes the nation a prime target for cyberattacks. Yu said this issue is not isolated to Taiwan but rather a global challenge.
