TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei District Court sentenced on Friday (Nov. 29) the former Taipei City Councilor Lin Ying-meng (林穎孟) and her assistant Yeh Yao-chang (葉曜彰) for fraud and embezzling public funds.
The pair were sentenced to three years and eight months, and five years and eight months in prison, respectively. However, the ruling can be appealed.
An unrepentant Lin responded in a Facebook post by saying, "Not a dime went into my pocket," per CNA.
Prosecutors said Lin hired her ex-boyfriend, Yeh, as an assistant when she represented Taipei's Daan and Wenshan districts from 2018. She also handed over city funds to him for supposed public relations work when he started a PR company.
Furthermore, she was also accused of taking a subsidy to pay a student assistant's salary and insurance.
Prosecutors set out corruption charges against Lin and Yeh in August 2022.
