TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TSMC is negotiating with Nvidia to produce artificial intelligence chips at the Taiwanese manufacturer's new US plant in Arizona, Reuters reported on Wednesday (Dec. 5).
The news agency cited three unnamed sources familiar with the matter who said TSMC is preparing to start producing Nvidia’s Blackwell chips early next year. TSMC has been manufacturing Nvidia's Blackwell chips in Taiwan since they were unveiled in March.
If produced in Arizona, Nvidia’s Blackwell chips would need to be sent to Taiwan for packaging. Two of the sources said the Arizona plant does not have the chip-on wafer-on-substrate capacity needed to produce the Blackwell chips.
TSMC and Nvidia did not comment on the report. The sources declined to be named saying the ongoing talks are confidential.
Two of the sources said Apple and Advanced Micro Devices are customers of the Arizona plant. Neither company commented on the report.
