TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is set to finish mass producing its Wan Chien air-to-ground cruise missiles by the end of December, a military source revealed on Saturday (Dec. 7).
This will be the first of 10 missile production goals to be completed, it said. From 2022-2024, approximately 150 missiles have been built with a budget of NT$12.5 billion (US$385.68 million), per Liberty Times.
Military officials revealed today that the Wan Chien missile is classified as the Wan Chien-I by the Air Force and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. Furthermore, NCSIST has developed and tested an extended-range version, the Wan Chien-II, capable of reaching up to 400 kilometers.
Wan Chien missiles are loaded onto domestically produced IDF jets, significantly enhancing their long-range precision strike capabilities. The missile has a maximum range of up to 200 kilometers. Once launched, it delivers large-scale lethality to enemy airfields and troops.
The development of Wan Chien variants will continue under the defense ministry’s annual budget, the military source said, ensuring progress in missile capability advancements.
Meanwhile, Taiwan is producing Sky Sword II, Sky Bow III, and Hsiung Sheng missiles to meet air defense needs.
