TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 2024 Taipei Marathon is set to take place Sunday, attracting a record 4,380 international and 28,000 domestic runners.
The marathon has achieved a significant milestone by becoming a World Athletics Gold Label race. The recognition has attracted more runners this year, the Taipei Department of Sports said.
Only 30% of full marathon entries were drawn. On registration the first day half marathon slots sold out, the fastest in the event's history, per CNA.
The race will feature a strong field of international and domestic athletes, including top runners from Japan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and other countries. Domestically, 2023 Taipei Marathon champions Chiang Chieh-wen (蔣介文) and Chen Yi-ning (陳逸寧), as well as 2023 half marathon champion Chou Ting-yin (周庭印) and 2022 half marathon champion Tsao Chun-yu (曹純玉), will be among the competitors.
The marathon will offer enhanced support for runners with energy gels at the 20 km, 25 km, and 30 km aid stations. Participants can enjoy refreshments like pineapple cakes, potato chips, grass jelly, and nougat.
Cheng Tzu-chien (鄭子健), the youngest marathon record holder at the National Games, will lead the pacer group. Renowned ultramarathon runner Chen Yen-po (Tommy, 陳彥博) will be among the distinguished guests presenting medals to the finishers.
Due to the anticipated cold weather, Taipei Sports Commissioner Wang Hung-hsiang (王泓翔) urged all participants to prioritize health and safety. He advised runners to warm up properly, wear warm clothing, and listen to their bodies.
To accommodate the early morning race, Taipei Metro will begin operations at 5:00 a.m., with shorter intervals on the Bannan and Wenhu lines before 6:00 a.m. The Xiaobitan and Xinbeitou branches will commence operations at 6:00 a.m.
