TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese American director Ang Lee (李安) has been bestowed the Directors Guild of America's (DGA) 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award.
The DGA announced Tuesday that Lee will receive this year’s award for his "extraordinary achievements in the art of cinema and motion picture direction.” The organization will present the award to Lee at the 77th Annual DGA Awards on Feb. 8.
“Ang Lee is truly a master filmmaker ... always fearlessly taking on new challenges, never repeating himself, and consistently achieving cinematic excellence,” said DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter. "His unique approach has left an indelible mark on the history of cinema that will be celebrated for generations to come. The DGA couldn’t be prouder to honor Ang Lee as a recipient of our Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Lee won two Oscars for best director for the films "Brokeback Mountain" and "Life of Pi." He also won two Golden Globes for best director for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and “Brokeback Mountain.”
Lee, who joined the DGA in 1996, said the Lifetime Achievement Award was a momentous achievement and an opportunity to reflect on his work’s impact on fellow filmmakers.
Lee was born in Pingtung, Taiwan in 1954. He graduated from National Taiwan College of Arts in 1975, then obtained a master’s degree in film production at New York University in the US.
In November, Lee became the first Taiwanese to win the Praemium Imperiale award, often called Japan’s “Nobel Prize for the Arts.”
