TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Huge numbers of stargazers flocked to Hehuanshan early Saturday (Dec. 14) to witness the Geminid meteor shower.
The meteor shower will peak Saturday night, with up to 150 meteors visible per hour. The best viewing time is expected to be around midnight, per UDN.
A cold front has brought Taiwan the coldest temperatures of the season, with Hehuanshan mountain dropping to -2 C on Saturday morning. Police urged visitors to prepare for freezing temperatures, rest adequately before their trip, and bring warm clothing to prevent altitude sickness.
Additional police were deployed Friday night to manage crowding. The event saw three minor collisions and eight vehicles ticketed for illegal parking, police said.
Parking lots at Wuling and Kunyang were filled, forcing some visitors to park illegally along the roadside, including in emergency lanes. Police used loudspeakers to clear these areas, and traffic gradually eased by 7 or 8 a.m., per CNA.
Historical observation records suggest the Geminid meteor shower can retain 50-60% of its peak intensity on the days surrounding its peak, Taipei Astronomical Museum pointed out. Early mornings on Saturday and Sunday are ideal for viewing.
The Geminids are known for their abundance and reliability, characterized by a moderate speed of approximately 35 kilometers per second, bright luminosity, and occasional fireballs. Most of the meteors are vibrant in color, TAM said.
