TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China Airlines said Thursday it has purchased 20 passenger aircraft and four cargo planes for around NT$387 billion (US$12.09 billion).
The order includes 10 Airbus A350-1000 passenger aircraft, 10 Boeing 777-9 airliners, and four Boeing 777-8F cargo planes. The new aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and will be deployed on North American and European routes, per CNA.
According to China Airlines, the A350-1000 aircraft will be equipped with the U.K.’s Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, while the 777-9 aircraft will feature the US’s General Electric Aviation GE9X engines. The company said the new aircraft will feature economy, premium economy, and business classes.
The airline said the 777-8F cargo planes and the already-in-service 777F cargo aircraft have the same cargo specifications. They will work together to enhance the airline's capabilities, the company said.
China Airlines has been collaborating with aviation experts since last year to improve operational issues such as aircraft safety, aviation technology, and flight efficiency. It said the company finalized the aircraft purchase after negotiations and price discussions with manufacturers.
The airline added that compared with the previous generation, the new aircraft can reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by about 25%.
Since 2021, China Airlines has ordered 25 Airbus A321neo single-aisle aircraft, with delivery by 2026. On Dec. 10, China Airlines signed a contract with Airbus to upgrade 15 A350 planes, aiming for service starting in 2027.
