TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A police officer formerly assigned to the president’s secret service detail has been arrested on suspicion of leaking critical information.
An official representing the Special Police Sixth Unit said Thursday that an officer surnamed Tsao (曹), who was under investigation since May, was removed from duty and detained on Dec. 9. Prosecutors in Tainan charged Tsao with leaking information on the president’s itinerary to unauthorized persons, reported CNA.
The Special Police Sixth Unit said that Tsao shared details of Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) schedule, persons he would meet, and the presidential motorcade route with his friends via electronic communications, per CNA. The incident occurred in May, after which Tsao was transferred to a less sensitive position on the police force.
After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors determined with a high likelihood that Tsao may have been guilty of collusion with parties outside of the National Police Agency. The court reportedly issued a warrant to prosecutors to search the officer’s home and communications for evidence related to the charges.
Spokespersons for the Presidential Office and National Security Bureau said that they are prepared to cooperate with prosecutors working on the case.
