TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will send a large delegation of officials led by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) to Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, according to digital newspaper Politico.
It said Friday that the KMT politician would have to negotiate Chinese anger at Taiwanese politicians attending the event. It also quoted academic David Sacks as saying Han would try to convince Trump that Taiwan is serious about its self-defense.
Trump has previously criticized Taiwan for not spending enough on its defense. He has also been critical of its hold on the global semiconductor industry.
Politico said information about Han leading the delegation to Washington was based on three sources “familiar with Taipei’s planning.” However, it did not name the individuals.
Taiwan’s representative office in the US did not comment on the news. There has been no official comment on what a Taiwan delegation to attend the inauguration would look like.
Trump is set to become the 47th president of the United States on Jan. 20.
