TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — On Saturday night, pop star A-Mei held the first of five concerts this week at Taipei Dome, with the last show scheduled for New Year’s Eve.
Saturday’s concert, part of the ASMeiR MAXXX tour, drew 40,000 people, filling the stands at Taipei Dome. However, the event was not without controversy, as residents living near Taipei Dome were shocked by the noise and vibrations, which some people reported were similar to a small earthquake, per CNA.
Between 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Taipei’s emergency hotline received 30 reports expressing concern over noise disturbances. Buildings were reportedly shaken by singing and vibrations, which peaked during A-Mei’s finale performance of the song “Three Days, Three Nights,” reported UDN.
Concerned netizens shared clips of shaking fans, windows, and light fixtures in their apartments, with the most serious instances reported along Section 4 of Zhongxiao East Road.
The local borough chief said the shaking caused by the music and fans singing and dancing was like an “earthquake.” The borough chief and some residents called for the government to suspend singing and dancing at future events.
The Taipei Department of Sports stated in response to the public’s concerns that it will consult the venue operator, the Farglory Corporation. The city government said it would encourage Farglory to dispatch personnel to monitor for excessive dancing at future events, reported UDN.
Farglory said Taipei Dome has been designed with sound-absorbing panels and complies with safety regulations. They said that if local authorities have suggestions or advice on managing operations, the company will work to implement them, per CNA.
A-Mei will perform again at Taipei Dome on Sunday, with shows also scheduled for Dec. 28, 29, and New Year's Eve.
