TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) will represent Taiwan at the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, a top presidential official said Wednesday.
Presidential Secretary-General Pan Men-an (潘孟安) rejected media speculation that recent clashes between the ruling camp and opposition at the Legislative Yuan had damaged Han’s chances, per CNA. Pan said that President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) had entrusted him to meet Han “three or four weeks ago” to give him the task of envoy to the Jan. 20 inauguration.
After the Oct. 10 National Day, Pan invited Han to lunch to discuss the issue, but Han told him he had no time, a presidential official told lawmakers Wednesday.
The Presidential Office has not announced a schedule for the Taiwan delegation to Washington. It is also unknown who will accompany Han to the US, though the major political parties usually send separate delegations.
