TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei City Government Department of Labor announced Wednesday that McDonald’s has been fined NT$1 million (US$30,000) for violating the Gender Equality in Employment Act.
The labor department in a press release said it required McDonald’s to submit investigation data regarding the case of a supervisor sexually assaulting a female employee who then committed suicide, per CNA. McDonald’s submitted a report on Tuesday.
McDonald’s did not fulfill Article 13, Paragraph 2 of the Gender Equality in Employment Act, the labor department said. The law requires employers to take corrective and remedial measures upon becoming aware of sexual harassment.
However, the labor department said McDonald’s did not provide counseling or necessary services to the victim, clearly violating the law.
“When an institution becomes aware of sexual harassment, it should take immediate and effective corrective and remedial measures,” the labor department commented. “It cannot be ignored.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide, please seek help immediately. You can call the Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center at 1925, or the Taiwan Lifeline International at 1995 (English and Mandarin service available).
