TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Enrollment rates at nine universities in Taiwan dropped below 60% this year.
The Ministry of Education released the enrollment rates for the academic year Friday, revealing that nine universities had rates below 60%. Aletheia University recorded the lowest rate, while National Taitung Junior College was the only public institution below 60%.
Private universities with enrollment rates below 60% include:
- Aletheia University (30.49%)
- Christ's College Taipei (31.82%)
- Taiwan Theological College and Seminary (54.55%)
- Da-Yeh University (56.35%)
- China Evangelical Seminary (57.14%)
- Hsuan Chuang University (58.48%)
Of these, Aletheia and Da-Yeh have both seen enrollment rates below 60% for the past three years, per CNA.
Technical and vocational schools with rates below 60% include:
- National Taitung Junior College (36.54%)
- Yuanpei University of Medical Technology (54.71%)
- Chienkuo Technology University (57.37%)
Historically, a school’s enrollment rate falling below 60% for two consecutive years and having fewer than 3,000 students was a key indicator for being flagged by the education ministry as needing special guidance. Taiwanese media often refer to the 60% enrollment rate as a "warning line" or "flood line" when reporting the closure of private universities, per CNA.
However, the ministry has revised its guidelines for assisting private higher education institutions in improvement and closure in recent years, and enrollment rates are no longer an indicator of a need for special guidance.
