TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A strong gust of wind on Saturday night led to the collapse of an eight-story scaffolding on Hualien’s Zhongshan Road.
A 23-year-old female scooter rider was struck in the head by a piece of metal scaffolding. She was sent to the hospital for immediate treatment, per PTS.
In addition, nine scooters and two cars parked on the street were also damaged.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said, "There was a strong wind, and I heard a swishing sound, and then I saw the entire scaffolding fall." Another eyewitness described the scaffolding as violently shaking before toppling over.

Authorities blocked the two-lane road to traffic as construction workers dismantled the collapsed scaffolding. Firefighters also helped citizens move their scooters parked adjacent to the collapsed scaffolding.
Authorities are investigating the scaffolding collapse to identify the cause as strong wind or structural and engineering issues. Normal traffic was restored to Zhongshan Road at 11:10 p.m.
