TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Concerts by pop diva A-Mei (張惠妹) at Taipei Dome damaged the nearby protected Songshan Tobacco Factory, reports said Tuesday.
The star was one of the first singers allowed to perform since the city allowed concerts at the venue in addition to baseball and sports games, for which it was originally designed. However, A-Mei’s concerts have been noted for energetic jumping and shouting by fans, causing small “earthquakes.”
In addition to nearby residents complaining about the noise, the Taipei City Cultural Heritage Commission found the old factory from the 1930s had sustained damage, per CNA. Commission member Chan Tien-chuan (詹添全) said on Dec. 28 and 29, he had seen old cracks from the construction of Taipei Dome reopening.
Chan also noted signs of new damage to walls and bricks. The committee called for measures to prevent further incidents such as strengthening the factory buildings and banning fans from jumping.
A-Mei’s last concert at the 40,000-seat Taipei Dome is scheduled for New Year’s Eve.
