TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A burned man was found dead in a freezer in the cargo bed of a truck in north Taiwan on Monday.
Police discovered the charred remains in a blue pickup parked on Keelung's Peide Road. Inside an unplugged white freezer in the truck bed, officers found a curled-up body, later identified as a 69-year-old man surnamed Chao (趙), per CNA.
Investigators suspect the murder stemmed from a debt dispute. Five suspects including individuals surnamed Wu (吳), Pan (潘), Lin (林), and Chen (陳) were identified.
Early Tuesday morning, police apprehended Wu at a friend’s residence in Taichung with assistance from a task force. Officers seized a firearm from Wu during the arrest.
Wu was transferred to the Keelung District Prosecutors Office at 9 p.m. Tuesday for questioning. Prosecutors petitioned the Keelung District Court early Wednesday for Wu’s detention incommunicado, citing risks of flight, evidence tampering, or collusion with accomplices.
The court approved the request after a hearing, stating that Wu, suspected of murder and other crimes, faces charges with a minimum sentence of five years. Wu denied involvement in the murder but admitted to abandoning the body and possessing firearms and ammunition.
The court ordered Wu to be detained for two months with all visits and communications prohibited. Meanwhile, police have deployed resources to track down the remaining suspects.
