TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Lai Ching-te is extending an olive branch to Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) to foster bipartisan reconciliation, DPP Caucus Leader Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) said at a press conference on Thursday.
She explained that Lai selected Han to lead the delegation for Trump’s inauguration as a gesture of goodwill and to demonstrate cohesiveness to the international community, CNA reported. The president said Wednesday he plans to invite Han for coffee to discuss the US visit before the delegation departs.
Wu said Lai views a meeting as an opportunity to engage with Han on procedural issues, legislative challenges, and proposed bills. She pointed out that Lai had invited Han many times before following the National Day celebrations, to thank him for organizing the event.
Even so, Han has declined to meet. Wu said Lai remains committed to fostering harmony and cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties. Lai's gestures come as tensions are running high between the DPP and opposition parties.
The Legislative Yuan rejected all seven presidential nominees for the Judicial Yuan and the Council of Grand Justices last week. The president had praised them as legal experts with years of experience who would protect the Constitution.
