TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Ahead of the busy Lunar New Year holidays, Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport has banned the riding of electric luggage.
The ban includes bicycles, surfboards, and other fast-moving items. The reason given is to protect the safety of travelers and maintain order in crowded areas, the Liberty Times reported.
However, travelers are allowed to take them by hand, or transport them on luggage carts.
Passengers breaking the rules will first receive a warning, but if they do not comply the Aviation Police Bureau will intervene, according to Taoyuan International Airport Corporation.
Online reaction has been positive, though some individuals have called for clear notices and the introduction of detailed fines.
Some airports in Japan, including Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, have already implemented bans on riding electric luggage. Riding them on public roads is treated as a traffic violation.
TIAC is expecting 1.55 million travelers, or an average of 140,000 per day, to pass through Taoyuan during the Lunar New Year period from Jan. 24 to Feb. 3.
