TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – DPP Legislative Caucus Whip Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) on Saturday proposed launching recall campaigns against 41 KMT lawmakers to resolve political deadlock.
The KMT and the smaller TPP have frequently joined forces to pass legislation unacceptable to the DPP government of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). The DPP on Friday suggested a vote to choose a new legislative speaker to replace Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), a KMT lawmaker deemed too partisan during recent votes.
Ker said Saturday public opinion could only be represented at the Legislative Yuan if 41 KMT lawmakers were recalled, per CNA. Out of 113 legislators, the KMT has 39 members directly elected per district, and two independents who joined the KMT caucus.
Ker slammed the opposition for failing to conduct rational discussions of new legislation. Disputes recently focused on the role of the Constitutional Court, the funding of local governments, and the holding of recall votes.
The legislative speaker could be replaced if one-third of lawmakers table the proposal, and two thirds vote in favor. According to Ker, that would be possible if enough KMT lawmakers were recalled.
