TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s 5G users exceeded 10 million in November, achieving a 33.7% penetration rate, CNA reported Saturday.
According to the National Communications Commission, there are approximately 29.69 million mobile users in Taiwan. Users of 4G fell below 20 million for the first time in October, dropping to 19.68 million, per Liberty Times.
First introduced in Taiwan in 2020, 5G provides users with cellular data speeds up to 20 Gbps, compared to 4G’s 1 Gbps cap. There is also low latency, under five milliseconds, with 5G.
Among the three major telecom operators, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and FarEasTone have 5G user counts of 3.88 million, 3.13 million, and 2.99 million, respectively.
Mobile communications revenue in Q3 2024 was NT$42.72 billion (US$1.3 billion), up by NT$210 million from the previous quarter. Subscription fees accounted for the largest share at NT$36.51 billion.
Retail chain Jason Communication explained that lower prices for mid-range 5G smartphones have made more users aware of 5G. Enhanced video streaming and faster download speeds have also encouraged upgrades, it added.
