TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s first domestically built submarine, the Hai Kun, has no issues, CSBC General Manager Tsai Kun-Tsung (蔡坤宗) assured during a media briefing on Monday.
The Hai Kun's weight control is precise, with a margin of error within 0.5%, Tsai said, according to CNA. He confirmed that the submarine can submerge and surface safely without any problems.
Regarding the phased production of seven submarines under a "2+3+2" approach, Tsai explained that building two submarines first provides an opportunity to incorporate design improvements based on Navy feedback for subsequent batches. He added that the submarine’s design meets Navy requirements, and all equipment has passed Factory Acceptance Tests and been certified by foreign technical consultants.
Tsai highlighted that the submarine program has significantly enhanced Taiwan’s design capabilities and expanded the pool of local suppliers, delivering substantial benefits to Taiwan’s defense industry.
The Hai Kun is currently undergoing Harbor Acceptance Tests and is scheduled to begin Sea Acceptance Tests in April. Delivery to the Navy is expected by November.
