TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An undersea cable near New Taipei damaged by a Cameroon-registered container ship with a Chinese name will be repaired by the end of January, Chunghwa Telecom said Monday.
The Shunxin39 was investigated as the main suspect for the damage that occurred Friday morning. Chunghwa Telecom, which is a partner in the Trans-Pacific Express Cable System linking Asia to the United States, said it had asked a repair ship from overseas to work on the project, per CNA.
Depending on weather conditions off northern Taiwan, repairs could be completed by the end of January, the telecom operator said. The number of similar incidents had not markedly increased in the past few years, though the company said the precise figures were confidential. During the weekend, a Mongolian-flagged Chinese ship was also seen in the neighborhood of undersea cables.
The Ministry of Digital Affairs said that in the past, the location of underwater communication cables had been public to help ships avoid them, but maybe now was the time to develop new warning mechanisms. Technology also needed to progress to allow the cables to be buried deeper, so anchors would not damage them.
