TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The legislature passed the third reading of a bill that clears the way to create a Ministry of Sports on Tuesday.
The Cabinet introduced the legislation in October, which lawmakers later deliberated and approved, opening the door for sports-related policies and other resources for developing a domestic sports industry, per CNA.
Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君), convener of a Cabinet-level sports advisory group, said the new ministry would lead Taiwan into a new era of sports. Chen predicted that preparatory work will allow the Ministry of Sports to be operational later this year.
Passage of the bill will allow for the appointment of a minister of sports, two deputy ministers, and one vice minister.
The new ministry will also include departments devoted to international affairs, athletics, industry and technology, facilities planning, comprehensive planning, and adaptive sports. A major goal of the ministry will be greater promotion of sports diplomacy, allowing for more collaboration with international partners.
Cheng applauded the bill's passage on social media, expressing gratitude to the ruling and opposition lawmakers for their support. She also thanked advisory committee members who provided valuable suggestions for the new ministry.
According to Cheng, one of the core principles of the new ministry is “sports for all,” encouraging greater participation in sporting activities through the support of sports associations, communities, and clubs.
The passage of the bill will allow for the creation of a Sports Industry Development Center and supporting facilities to assist Taiwan athletes, such as the National Sports Training Center and the Taiwan Institute of Sports Science.
Cheng said promoting national sports not only leads to better health and wellness but will also improve the sports industry ecosystem. Furthermore, Cheng said the new ministry will enhance Taiwan's soft power gaining more international visibility for Taiwan through participation in international competitions.
