TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Only Taiwan’s information and communications technology (ICT) and car sectors might be hit by the tariffs planned by US President-elect Donald Trump, Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) said Wednesday.
Responding to questions from lawmakers, Kuo said the new US administration was likely to target China the most with tariffs. There might also be differences between Trump’s statements before his Jan. 20 inauguration and his actions after taking office, Kuo added.
According to the minister, Trump wants to bring back the 1980s, when the car industry played a prominent role in the US economy, Radio Taiwan International reported. As a result, Taiwan’s automotive sector might have cause to worry about the new tariffs.
In any event, the Ministry of Economic Affairs would assist Taiwanese industries in relocating to avoid US tariffs, Kuo said. Taiwan’s foreign trade has also adapted to a new environment, becoming less dependent on China over the past few years, he added.
