TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute unveiled its AI badminton coach at CES in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories Division Director Wang Chin-hung (王欽宏) said that badminton is a fast-paced sport, with shuttle speeds ranging from 150 to 200 kph, per CNA.
ITRI explained that high-speed cameras capture players’ swings and postures, instantly upload data to the cloud, and use generative AI to provide real-time analysis and feedback. The technology can also be adapted for tennis and baseball, it added.
One Slovenian attendee took the coach for a test run. He said while the shuttle’s landing spot was too low for his preference, applying this tool in a larger sports setting would improve players’ skills.
Taiwanese American badminton player Howard Shu (舒之颢) also tested the coach, saying he is hopeful for its use in coaching, per Liberty Times.
ITRI’s portfolio this year also includes a smart sleep mat and a portable knee joint exoskeleton. The former tracks heart rate and breathing during sleep while the latter enhances lower limb strength and walking.
