TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TPP Acting Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) accused prosecutors from the Taipei District Prosecutors Office of improper conduct on Wednesday after they dined with former DPP Chair Wu Nai-jen (吳乃仁).
Wu, who was sentenced to nine months in prison in 2014 for mishandling government land during his tenure as chair of Taiwan Sugar Corporation, has yet to fully repay the damages, per Storm Media. Huang alleged that Wu dined with TDPO prosecutor Hsu Ming-chu (徐名駒) and four other prosecutors at the upscale Ad Astra restaurant run by Michelin chef Kevin Rose, according to UDN.
Huang questioned whether Hsu had flouted prosecutorial ethics by dining with Wu in a private booth with a minimum order of NT$60,000 (US$1,821). Sources suggested the other prosecutors were likely unaware of Wu’s involvement beforehand.
In response, Justice Minister Cheng Ming-chein (鄭銘謙) confirmed the TDPO had initiated an investigation into the matter after Huang’s accusations, per CNA. Cheng added the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office had also been asked to conduct a separate inquiry.
Huang criticized Taiwan Sugar Corporation and the Taipei District Court for failing to collect Wu’s unpaid fines while frequenting exclusive restaurants. Taiwan Sugar Corporation Chair Wu Ming-chang (吳明昌) said the corporation had already seized NT$6 million from Wu and was in the process of confiscating additional assets, per CNA.
In response to Huang’s allegations, DPP Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) said the credibility of the accusation should be determined by an official investigation, per CNA. Wu also criticized Huang for not holding former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) to the same standard, suggesting that Ko had held numerous meetings with individuals tied to the Core Pacific Development case.
Wu suggested that Huang should be held accountable if his accusations of impropriety prove to be false.
