TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Environment said Thursday that carbon inventory will be expanded to service sectors with high energy consumption.
The policy will encompass other high-energy sectors, including transportation, medical institutions, schools, and small- to medium-sized manufacturers. Facilities emitting more than 5,000 tonnes of carbon annually at a single site or exceeding 10,000 tonnes across the entire company will be subject to regulations, per CNA.
The ministry will continue supporting service sectors in conducting carbon inventories. From next year, businesses exceeding the regulated emission limits will be required to register their greenhouse gas emissions by May for the previous year.
The ministry said some service sectors have upgraded their equipment to enhance energy efficiency. It will continue assisting businesses in partnering with energy service companies.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has subsidized service sectors for the installation of energy-saving equipment from 2023 to last year. Over the past two years, approximately 40,000 subsidy applications have been approved, primarily from small and medium-sized businesses upgrading lighting or air conditioning systems.
The economic ministry launched a subsidy program last year to encourage carbon reduction efforts among service sectors. This program offers two categories of subsidies, with maximum funding amounts of NT$300,000 (US$9,434) and NT$1.5 million.
The economic ministry added that manufacturing accounts for the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, while the commercial sector contributes 20%.
