TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan and the United States signed an NT$10.31 billion (US$312.9 million) contract for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, reports said Friday.
The NASAMS weapons deal was originally announced in October, but details about the transaction had not been revealed. Taiwan’s defense mission in the US and the American Institute in Taiwan only recently signed the contract, which remains valid until 2034, per CNA.
The contract mentioned the Air Force as a partner, with Taipei’s Songshan District and New Taipei’s Tamsui District as the locations involved.
The October arms deal also involves a NT$6.42 billion radar system for Shimen in New Taipei, Houlong in Miaoli, Tianliao in Kaohsiung, and Hualien County. A separate NT$7.61 billion radar system is planned for Taipei’s Beitou District, Houlong in Miaoli, Hengchun in Pingtung, and Shoufeng in Hualien. Both radar contracts cover the period until 2030.
NASAMS systems are considered mid-range air defense missile systems with a range between 40 and 50 kilometers. The launchers can also fire AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles and AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles which earlier reports said were part of the October deal with the US.
