TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Central Weather Administration said Saturday would see temperatures drop below 10 C in 17 cities and counties.
Very cold weather with the possibility of a minimum under 6 C was possible in Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Yilan, CWA reported. Also, a cold surge with temperatures falling under 10 C was expected in west and central Taiwan, with the exception of Hsinchu City, Pingtung, and Penghu.
While the advisories are valid until Sunday morning, cold weather is likely to remain until Monday.
The cold weather caused a rising number of fatalities due to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, per CNA. Since Jan. 1, the National Fire Agency has recorded 437 deaths, with a peak of 54 on Friday.
Medical experts said cases mostly occurred in the early morning when temperatures are at their lowest. While aged people face the highest risk, individuals should keep an eye on their condition from the age of 40.
